Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Supports USB 3 Speeds, but There's a Catch!

Apple finally brings USB-C and USB 3 speeds to the iPhone 15 Pro. However, to unlock the blazing 10 Gbps speeds, you'll need to make an additional purchase.

In a significant move, Apple has added USB-C support to its iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. With promises of high-speed data transfers up to 10 Gbps, it seemed like a tech dream come true. But here's the kicker: the speed boost doesn't come right out of the box!

Apple, during its keynote, made it clear that users would need to buy "an optional USB 3" cable to unlock these higher data speeds. Currently, Apple offers a Thunderbolt 4 cable for this purpose, priced at a steep $69. Yes, you read that right—sixty-nine dollars!

By default, the iPhone 15 series ships with a USB 2.0 cable with a Type-C port. That means you're capped at a data transfer speed of 480 Mbps. Given that it's 2023, this isn't quite the cutting-edge speed you'd expect from a Pro device.

Apple isn't stopping at the optional high-speed cable. The company has also launched a series of USB-C accessories, including higher wattage charging cables and a USB-C to Lightning dongle. So if you're aiming for an optimal iPhone 15 Pro experience, be prepared to spend more than just the cost of the phone.

On the bright side, the new USB controller enables video output up to 4K at 60 fps HDR, which could be a boon for content creators and media enthusiasts. But again, you'll need that optional cable.

The iPhone 15 Pro promises a lot, but to take full advantage of its capabilities, you'll have to dig a little deeper into your pockets. Is the speed boost worth the extra cash? Only time—and user reviews—will tell!
