Google Flights is enhancing its services by introducing a feature that uses historical trend data to guide travelers on the most affordable times to book flights.
The new "cheapest time to book" feature gives insights into when flight prices for a specific destination have typically been at their lowest. This information can help travelers make informed decisions on whether to book a flight immediately or wait for a better deal.
The "cheapest time to book" feature complements existing tools on Google Flights, such as price tracking notifications and assessments of whether current prices are low, typical, or high compared to past rates.
A unique addition is the price guarantee badge available for select U.S. itineraries. Google is so confident that the listed price is the lowest it will be before departure, they offer a refund via Google Pay if the fare drops.
Google also shared some valuable insights in their 2023 flight booking trends report. For example, Christmas flight prices have been cheapest 71 days before departure, contrasting with 22 days in the previous year. For U.S. trips to Europe, there's no longer a "sweet spot" where prices dip before rising; they're generally lowest 72 days or more before departure.
The "cheapest time to book" feature brings a new layer of transparency to the flight booking process. By equipping travelers with more comprehensive data, Google Flights is making it easier for users to find the best deals and plan their trips more effectively.
