Threads by Meta Moves Toward Adding DM Feature to Rival X

Meta's Threads app is inching closer to launching its own DM feature, positioning it as a potent rival to X and other leading social platforms.

Meta's Threads Eyes DM Integration to Challenge X

The landscape of social media messaging might soon witness a new entrant. Despite prior reluctance, Meta's Threads team is now leaning towards incorporating a direct messaging (DM) option. This move aligns Threads more closely with X and other similar platforms.

Data privacy expert, Jorge Caballero, highlighted recent additions in the Threads app that suggest DM-related functionalities. Caballero's findings suggest the potential for encrypted DMs in Threads, along with options for sending self-vanishing messages.

Such features are consistent with Meta's other communication tools. The default encryption addition also appears to pave the way for seamless interoperability with Meta's broader messaging ecosystem, something the tech giant has pursued since 2019.

Meta's ambitious goal is to unify messaging across Messenger, Instagram Direct, and WhatsApp into a singular, cross-functional inbox. However, introducing DMs in Threads might have initially seemed redundant or complicated within this strategy. Nevertheless, to compete fiercely with Twitter/X and cater to growing user demand, Threads might soon tick the DM box.

Though still unconfirmed, Adam Mosseri, Instagram's chief, has recently shown a softer stance towards DM incorporation in Threads. This potential move seems to capitalize on Threads' increasing popularity, especially in light of X's recent challenges, like altered link previews and concerns over misinformation.

Data insights from emphasize this shift. As covered by Casey Newton of Platformer:

“From Saturday to Wednesday [this week], Threads' rank soared from #40 to #20 in download charts. The most notable rise was in the UK, skyrocketing 32 spots from #92 to #61.”

Although Meta hasn’t released an official statement, Threads is clearly riding a wave of increasing adoption, potentially spurred by concerns surrounding X's direction under Elon Musk.

It remains uncertain whether Threads will truly emerge as a serious contender to the former bird app, but the integration of DMs, along with other advanced features, seems to indicate a promising trajectory.
