X Enhances User-Led Moderation with Improved Tagging for Community Notes on Videos

X updates its Community Notes feature, now allowing notes added to a video to appear in all instances of that video across the platform. The move aims to add more context and combat misinformation.

X Upgrades Community Notes for Better Video Tagging

X is doubling down on community-led moderation with an upgrade to its Community Notes feature. Now, any note added to a video will appear in all instances of that video, providing valuable context and advisory notes to more users.

Previously known by the working title "Birdwatch," Community Notes has gained significant traction since Elon Musk took over the platform. The feature allows users to add contextual notes to posts and videos, providing an extra layer of information and perspective.

According to X, “Notes written on videos will automatically show on other posts containing matching videos.” This is an effective way to broaden the reach of these community-generated notes, especially for re-shared or edited clips, AI-generated videos, and more.

Under Musk’s leadership, the feature is envisioned as a means to combat platform misuse while adhering to free speech principles. It resonates with Reddit’s approach to moderation, which is largely driven by the community through upvotes and downvotes.

However, the effectiveness of Community Notes is still a subject of debate. Poynter Institute highlights that most Community Notes aren't seen by the users due to the structure of the review system, which requires consensus from users with opposing viewpoints to display a note.

As Poynter's Alex Mahadevan puts it, the system "requires a cross-ideological agreement on truth," a tall order in today's polarized social landscape.

While the feature has its limitations, the update to Community Notes may represent a step forward in creating a more informed online community. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the larger conversation around misinformation and platform moderation.
