Instagram has unveiled a groundbreaking addition for U.S.-based users—a generative AI-powered background editing tool, bringing a new dimension of creativity to Stories. Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta's lead for generative AI, shared the exciting news on Threads, highlighting how this tool enables users to transform their image backgrounds using engaging prompts.
Upon tapping the background editor icon on an image, users are greeted with ready prompts such as "On a red carpet," "Being chased by dinosaurs," or "Surrounded by puppies." Not just limited to presets, users can craft their own prompts, giving them complete control over their story backgrounds.
What makes this feature even more interactive is its shareability. When a user posts a Story adorned with the newly generated background, others viewing it will find a "Try it" sticker accompanying the prompt. This sticker invites them to dive into the image generation tool and create their personalized version of the story.
This move follows Snapchat's recent introduction of an AI-generated image tool for paying users, highlighting the ongoing competition in the social media space. Snapchat introduced "Dreams," empowering users to create whimsical self-images with various themes, while also offering prompt-based backgrounds for Snapchat+ users earlier this year.
In a broader stride within the realm of AI, Meta made a significant move by integrating its 28 AI-powered characters across its apps—WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram—for U.S. users. Additionally, Meta introduced a standalone AI-image generator, "Imagine with Meta," powered by its Emu model, providing enhanced support for Bing search and an improved context window.
