LinkedIn Widens ID Verification to Include Additional Regions

LinkedIn introduces a broader identity verification option via a partnership with Persona, enhancing user profile credibility. This step aims to combat bot profiles and enhance user trust across the platform.

LinkedIn Partners with Persona to Expand ID Verification for User Profiles

LinkedIn has expanded its identity verification feature by partnering with Persona, offering users in more regions the option to confirm their identity within the app.

Through LinkedIn's new ID verification process, users in specific regions can authenticate their ID documents using Persona. Upon successful verification, a verification badge is added to their LinkedIn profile, indicating the validation of their government-issued ID through LinkedIn's partner providers.

The verified badge enhances user credibility, signifying the authenticity of their identity linked to a government-issued ID. Initially launched in the U.S. via a collaboration with CLEAR, LinkedIn has since broadened its verification capabilities to include Canada and Mexico through the same partnership. The new Persona collaboration further extends this ID confirmation option to a wider user base.

According to LinkedIn, Persona, a third-party identity verification service, facilitates identity verification in multiple countries, including Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. However, availability may vary across users and regions.

The process requires a government-issued passport with an NFC chip that users can scan, enhancing the verification process. This additional layer of ID confirmation aims to elevate user trust by ensuring genuine interactions and authentic information exchange across the platform.

Given the growing concern over bot profiles and the integration of generative AI in social apps, LinkedIn's initiative to expand ID verification signifies a crucial step toward maintaining user authenticity and combating fraudulent profiles. This move aligns with broader efforts to foster genuine user interactions, a trend also reflected in certain regions where new users are charged a nominal fee for app engagement.
